Course Description

This training is intended to help health care professionals learn best practices for suicide risk assessment and management. Participants will become familiar with chronic and acute risk factors for suicide, protective factors for suicide, and how to formulate an overall level of suicide risk based on these factors. In addition, participants will learn when to screen for suicide risk and how to talk with individuals who may be suicidal to assess and manage risk. Participants will be taught suicide risk management strategies used in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based treatment for suicidal behaviours. These will include general guidelines for risk management and a specific protocol for intervening in a suicide crisis situation. Finally, participants will learn how to use the Linehan Risk Assessment and Management Protocol (LRAMP) as a means of documenting the suicide risk assessment and management process.

This training is for those who:

  • Want to begin treatment planning for suicidal clients.
  • Need to assess long-term and acute suicide risk.
  • Have no previous knowledge of DBT but would like to know more about using DBT targeting protocols to provide treatment for suicidal clients.
