Supervision and Consultation

The overarching goal of specialist supervision in DBT is to enhance the supervisee’s adherence to and competence in applying DBT principles, case conceptualisation and strategies.  A secondary goal is to facilitate the supervisee’s consultation with his or her DBT team to maximise the likelihood that the team delivers an adherent DBT programme.  Though supervision generally focuses on the conduct of individual therapy, it can also be provided for group skills training or consultation teams.

Therapists learning DBT often experience frustration early on in the process related to aspects of the therapy that may be particular to DBT. DBT is a complex and evolving treatment, and part of the therapy involved being in the presence of seemingly and unsolvable problems and paradoxes.

DBT Supervisors must be skilled at assisting therapists in developing their therapeutic relationships with their clients that includes some relatively unique characteristics. These include being able to balance seeing and taking seriously the client’s pain and limitations, while simultaneously not treating them as fragile or incapable. This involves developing a ‘real’ relationship; experience a genuine caring and concern for the client, and communicating that care in a direct was.

All of our trainers have been supervising teams and individuals for many years and have been proven to be successful as DBT team supervisors. They offer knowledgeable support which aids the development of clinicians DBT skills to help them become well-rounded DBT therapists.
