Janet Feigenbaum

Associate Professor Janet Feigenbaum is an International consultant trainer in DBT for BiDBT. She is a consultant clinical psychologist for North East London Foundation Trust (NELFT) and Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at University College London. She is clinical and strategic lead for Personality Disorder services for NELFT, clinical lead for the IMPART (Intensive Management of Personality disorders: Assessment and Recovery Team), and the Strategic and Clinical Lead for Evidence Based Practice in Psychological Therapies. She is an examiner for the PG Cert in DBT for Bangor University.

Training Experience in DBT

Janet has been providing training in DBT for British Isles DBT since March 2005. In addition she has presented workshops on DBT to a range of Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course, the Royal College of Psychiatry, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, the Royal College of Nursing and Midwifery, social services organisations, probation services, and private health care organisations.
Janet provides training, supervision, and consultation in DBT and PD service development in the UK, Ireland, and Europe. Janet was formerly chairman of the Board of Certification and Accreditation for the Society of DBT UK, and remains on the accreditation board. Janet provides adherence ratings for research trials based in Seattle with Marsha Linehan. Janet provides expert witness evidence in coroners cases involving questions of DBT and personality disorder.

Clinical Experience in DBT

Janet completed intensive training in DBT in Seattle in 1999/2000 while director of research for the Oscar Hill Service for personality disorder. The results of the RCT of the effectiveness for DBT for PD conducted at the Oscar Hill Service (Feigenbaum et al., 2012 – British Journal of Clinical Psychology). In 2003 she moved to NELFT and established one of the 11 National Pilot sites for personality disorder funded by the Department of Health (DDART; specialising in providing DBT and CBT for individuals with PD and co-morbid substance abuse). The service was successfully devolved and became IMPART. In September 2012 IMPART was selected by NHS England as one of three UK IAPT SMI demonstration sites for the treatment of people with a personality disorder.

Other Relevant Training and HEI Experience

Janet has been providing training to a wide range of services in working with self harm and suicide, recognising and working with personality disorder, outcome measurement in mental health services, and mental health service audit to DClinpsych courses in the UK and across a wide range of organisations. Janet has been an external examiner for Middlesex University, Kings College London, and Bangor University. Janet examines PhD and DClinPsych theses across the UK. Janet and her co-applicants have been awarded a five year NIHR programme grant to develop and evaluate DBT-Skills for Employment in the UK (for return to employment). The model and feasibility information are presented in her chapter in the Oxford University Handbook of DBT. Her other research projects include: developing a brief DBT informed intervention for reducing self harm presentations to A&E, evaluation of a 12 week, development of a DBT intervention for suicidal and self harming university students, and evaluation of DBT for bulimia.
