Course Description

In this 2-day workshop Professor Michaela Swales and Dr Christine Dunkley will delve deeper into the concept of Therapy Interfering Behaviour in DBT and how to treat it. They will look at the types of therapy interfering behaviour, and those that appear in both individual therapy and group skills training. Delegates will learn how to identify the function of the behaviour and a variety of strategies to rectify the problem. There will also be opportunity to bring your own examples for the training team to work on, and to try out some of the interventions in roleplay or discussion.

Learning objectives:
1. Be able to describe the concept of therapy interfering behaviour
2. Explain how the behaviour prevents the client from receiving therapy
3. Assess therapy interfering behaviour for form and function
4. identify key controlling variables for a Therapy Interfering Behaviour
5. Identify change strategies based on learning theory
6. Personalise the delivery of change strategies to fit the client.

Prerequisites

Delegates will have some experience of delivering an element of DBT. This could be either individual therapy or skills training group.
It is suitable for people who have already done Intensive or Foundational Training, or those who have joined a DBT team but have yet to undertake formal training.
